2 Timothy 1

  1. What insight does verses 1-5 give us on the relationship between Paul and Timothy?

  2. In verses 6-14 Paul encourages Timothy to fulfill his duty as a pastor. What does Paul say to encourage him?

  3. Verse 12 (ESV) says, “Which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me.” The phrase “what has been entrusted to me” here in the greek translates as “my deposit” and could be referring to God guarding the gospel or Paul’s life. I would think this is referring to the gospel because of verse 14 which Paul says, “…guard the good deposit entrusted to you.” referring to the gospel. From verses 8-14 describe what it looks like to guard the good deposit entrusted to Timothy, which is the gospel.

  4. Summarize verses 8-14 in a single sentence.

  5. Paul names Phygelus and Hermogenes as ones who deserted Paul in Asia. Nothing else in the Bible is said about these 2. He names Onesiphorus as one who refreshed him and served him. Onesiphorus is mentioned at the end of 2 Timothy in chapter 4 verse 19 where it says, “Gree Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus.” This tells us that Onesiphorus was in Ephesus with Timothy. Asia was the region where Ephesus, Colossae, and Troas were, not Rome was over in modern day Italy. What was of most interest to you in verses 15-18?

  6. In what ways are you encouraged in your faith from this chapter?
